Why Trench Protection Is Not Optional

• The 5 foot rule. OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P requires a protective system in any trench 5 feet deep or greater, unless it is cut in stable rock.
• Sized to the soil. We classify the ground as Type A, B, or C and pick a trench box, shoring, or a benched slope to match.
• Inspected daily. A competent person checks the trench each morning and after any rain that hits Kootenai County.

Our Process

After the Dig Line locate is marked, we excavate to line and grade, set pipe bedding, and lower the trench box as the cut deepens. Backfill goes in compacted lifts over the bedding, and we restore the surface. Spoil is managed so the site stays passable off streets like Appleway Avenue.
